Preston Caruthers Commits to Match $100,000 in Donations to Support Arlington’s Planetarium

Friday, December 31st, 2010

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

(Arlington, VA) – December 31, 2010 – After many months of behind-the-scenes work, Friends of the Arlington Planetarium announces a breathtaking, year-end contribution to their campaign to keep this school and community science center open. Mr. Preston Caruthers, Arlington builder and philanthropist, has committed to a $100,000 matching challenge to help meet the December 31st fundraising target of $241,680 set by Arlington Public School Superintendent Patrick Murphy. Beginning on December 30, 2010, all donations to the Friends will be matched by the Caruthers gift, until a total of $100,000 in new donations has been reached.

The ultimate target of this fundraising effort is $402,800—an amount the Superintendent has determined is needed for replacing the star projector, installing new seats, modernizing the interior lighting, and making other needed upgrades. The Superintendent has asked the Friends of the Planetarium to raise this amount by the end of the current academic year, or June 30, 2011, in order to keep the facility open and return it to full-time operation in the coming year.

Matching donations made before the end of today, December 31, 2010, are fully tax-deductible in the current year.

10 Day | $20K Challenge

Friends of the Arlington Planetarium is launching a 10-day donation drive during which we hope to raise $20,000 in new donations and pledges. In May 2010, the Superintendent of Arlington Public Schools told Friends of the Planetarium to raise $241,680 by December 31, 2010 and $402,800 by June 30, 2011. Our donations and pledges total now stands at $129,424. We’re not sure what will happen, come December 31st, if we do not meet the Superintendent’s fund-raising benchmark. No promises have been made, and there is a very real possibility that the Superintendent will recommend closure of the planetarium in early 2011 if we miss our goals. This is why we need your help more than ever.

Let’s show the Superintendent and Arlington School Board how much Arlington, surrounding counties, and cities care about this regional gem of science communication. We’ll provide updates about the 10-day drive each day on our Facebook and Twitter pages. The challenge ends on New Year’s Eve. Please donate or make a pledge, and spread the word as much as possible. Thank you for your support!
