Saving Arlington’s Planetarium: Our Story from saveplanetarium on Vimeo.

After more than 40 years of service to both the county schools & the public, Arlington’s Planetarium is in danger of closing due to budget shortfalls. Approximately $400,000 is needed to keep the facility open. A group of local supporters has formed the Friends of Arlington’s Planetarium, a 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to helping raise the necessary funds.

Kepler 11 Exoplanets

Science is all about finding answers to the Big Questions. One of the biggest that people have been asking for a long time is, “Are We Alone?” In this presentation and discussion, we will examine how scientists are going about the search for life beyond the Earth, including the latest missions and discoveries, what we have learned to date, and the mysteries that remain. The speaker, Dr. Alice Monet, is a retired planetary astronomer with 35 years experience working for the US Naval Observatory and (briefly) NASA. She is also a long-time resident of Arlington, and president of the Friends of Arlington’s Planetarium.

Event Details

Dr. Alice Monet, FoP President and veteran astronomer, presents the first “Science Sundays” lecture: “Are We Alone? The Search for Life Beyond Earth” on Sunday, February 27th @ 4:30 p.m. at Arlington’s David M. Brown Planetarium (1426 N. Quincy Street, Arlington, VA 22207). Note: Ages 9 and up.
